I'm always happy when my PT homework is to do a hike, rather than endless foot exercises. We headed out to the Linville Gorge area to do a waterfall hike. Fun! There is a long, long, long drive on a rough gravel road to the trailhead. We missed the trailhead (google maps isn't quite correct for navigation if you type in South Harper Creek Falls) and went to the end of the road with lots of no trespassing signs. We checked Gaia and were able to figure out that we had passed the trailhead.

The beginning of the hike is flat - easy hiking. No one must have been on the trail today, because we were constantly (every 10 feet!) running into cobwebs. Ugh. At least on the hike back we had no cobwebs because we had already run into them all. I've never been on a hike with so many!  We reached an intersection where you can go left to see the top of the falls and right to see a view of the falls from afar. We headed left first. We did see the top as well as a cliff face next to the waterfall. Then to the right. The trail has a stream crossing, and we got a little wet. We let Krumm wade in the water a bit. Then continued on to an overlook. It was hard to take a photo due to the position of the sun. Heading back, we stopped to let Krumm play in the water again. Continuing on...Krumm always likes to stick his head in holes - sometimes in the ground, sometimes in trees. Well, it was bound to happen. He stuck his head in the wrong tree hole. Yellow jackets must be nesting in there, because he got stung. I ran backwards. They came out of the tree but didn't chase us. He was really unhappy, swatting his face, climbing up my leg. We ended up having to bushwhack around the trail to get around the nest. The rest of the hike was uneventful.

Intersection - falls views both ways

Water crossing - we put a new stone in the water to make it possible to sort of rock hop.

South Harper Creek Falls, hard to see due to the angle of the sun.

I think I read that is Grandfather Mountain in the distance.
