- Hike northbound on the AT from Carvers Gap to Stan Murray Shelter
I saw a post on a women's FB group about someone looking for hiking partners to do a section of the AT starting from Carver's Gap. I had done some of the sections she was covering, but still needed others, so I signed up to join her.
I met Purple Lotus and Mercury at Carvers Gap at around 3:30, so we had a short day planned. Glen in the meantime hiked from Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge, in order to do a CMC 100 Favorite Trails hike. Glen still needs to hike the section from the turnoff to Grassy Ridge to Yellow Mountain Gap in order to finish this section of the AT.
The hike in was breathtaking of course. In my opinion, the prettiest section of the AT, at least south of NH. The pictures don't do it justice.
Many people that start at Carvers Gap go to Overmountain Shelter. I had camped at Overmountain on the same weekend a year ago with Krumm and froze. Today, we stopped earlier at Stan Murray Shelter. Not as scenic, but I figured it would be warmer than camping in the meadow at Overmountain Shelter. Purple Lotus and Mercury stayed in the shelter, and I stayed in my tent. We met a bunch of thru hikers and section hikers there. I used my -10 degree bag for the first time. I know people will laugh about it. But you know what - I still was cold (and was wearing my puffy pants to sleep in too)! What the hell! The temps were probably in the 30's. The sleeping bag is the bulkiest thing ever. Luckily, I just bought a ULA Catalyst pack, which can handle the extra volume. My tent site was covered with chestnuts that I had to toss aside before setting up - would love to have taken some home to roast.
Hanging out at Carvers Gap, waiting for the shuttle driver to drop off my hiking companions |
I just love this stand of trees |
