After a shower and a night at home, I was ready to get back on the trail! After driving around in confusion due to a detour at our I-40 exit, we met Dian at Brown Gap. From there we headed southbound to Standing Bear Hostel. Krummholz got to come along too. We were now crossing paths with thru hikers and section hikers that we had stayed with at our last shelter in the Smokies.
Today's excitement was that Dian finished the North Carolina and Tennessee sections of the AT! Way to go Dian! She finished Georgia and New Jersey this year as well.
I saw my first bear of the year today. I saw him below me and called out. He fled quickly. The shuttle driver from Standing Bear Hostel told Dian that they are relocating "bad" bears from the Smokies here. Dian saw a rattlesnake on the side of the trail. We missed it, even though we were hiking in front of her. It was another hot day in the 80's. Our climbing, although not much, was challenging due to the heat.
