Carolina Mountain Club Challenges:
- 100 Favorite Trails #29, Mt. Cammerer from Davenport Gap
I slept really well last night. Yeah! I think the nighttime temp was 58 degrees, so no puffy pants or puffy jacket needed.
Although on paper, today's hike looked like an easier day, it was tough. We had a steady climb for the first 3 miles of the day. That was fine once my muscles warmed up and I got into a rhythm. We took the side trail to Mt. Cammerer. That adds on some mileage, so some AT thru hikers skip it. I wanted to see the octagonal lookout tower though. The hike to the tower was pretty. The tower itself was very cool, but sadly in need of a lot of maintenance to restore it.
Once we finished the visit to Mt. Cammerer, most of our day was downhill until the end. Glen hiked in, hoping to reach Mt. Cammerer, but ended up stopping at Davenport Gap shelter. As we continued to descend, it got hotter and hotter. We passed by Davenport Gap and highway 40. With no shade, we continued to drip sweat. Once past Davenport Gap, we walked on Green Corner Road for a short bit. There is a steep staircase that leaves the road. My muscles said what??? Sweat was pouring off us as we made the final climb to Standing Bear hostel. We popped into our car (ah, air conditioning!) and headed home for the night. It was nice to get home, get squeeky clean, and change into loose cotton clothing, and be dry.
We have completed the Smokies! |
