We've tried to do this hike 5 times or so! Something has always gotten in the way. We found its best for a weekday hike, as parking is very limited at Allen Gap. We were hoping not to use microspikes, but we brought them anyways for insurance. We hiked part of this section before and had to turn around due to not having spikes and encountering deep snow.
The trails were all clear of snow on the first part of the hike. Yahoo! We skipped the spur trail to the fire tower (definitely worth a visit), and after that the temperatures dropped drastically, and we had some light snow on the trail. We had several clothing adjustments during the hike. The temperature, wind and trail conditions kept changing. In some areas, we were walking on loose ice that looked like ice cubes. That was slow going. I was hiking quite slowly today. The elevation gain killed me, and then at the end of the hike I had a tweaked knee. Maybe the elevation gain was tiring for Krummholz too. A couple of times when we stopped to take a rest, he actually lay down on the ground.
We encountered some blowdowns, but no time for us to work on removing them. We found a wooden basket on a tree next to the trail - Glen carried it out. Overall, a nice hike with some winter views.
