Parking: Garenflo Gap
We got out today to work on the section of the AT that we maintain. We want to get it in reasonable shape before the thru hiker bubble passes through in late March and early April. Krummholz, trail maintenance dog extraordinaire tagged along. We've hiked a little bit on the AT this winter and have seen just how crazy the rhododendrons get! As expected, we had a lot of work to do. We just brought a saw, loppers, and clippers. We were hoping to hike our whole section, but in the end, spent 5 hours on just the first mile! Oh dear! We encountered several down trees, and sooo many rhododendrons leaning over the trail. It was a very peaceful way to spend the day. The ground had a light covering of snow, and the only sound in the woods was of our sawing and lopping. Krummholz did great. Once we started working, he just hung out around us, playing in the woods, bringing us sticks to throw. Even though we only cleared 1 mile of our 4.1-mile section, we felt like we accomplished a lot today. We'll be back very soon to start tackling the next mile.
