Directions: Hike southbound from VA 42 to VA 617 (one way)

We saw no people on today's hike! Maybe because we are going southbound today, and most people we've encountered have also been southbound thru hikers. When we go northbound, I think we're more likely to cross paths with other hikers. Today's hike had pretty pastures. With cows. Krummholz stared. But luckily he's a very quiet dog. He was respectful of the cows. One cow took off, but the rest just stared at us. We had lots of stile crossings. I had to figure out a way that to get over - I'm just less agile since breaking my ankle. Krumm had to learn how to go under them, so he'd avoid the barbed wire in the fences next to them. Next to one of the stiles, someone had hung a snakeskin from a tree branch. Why? I really enjoyed this section, but by the end of the day, my bad ankle leg was aching. I think even Krummholz was tired, because as soon as we would stop for a break, he'd just lie down and nap.

We passed a sign indicating that this is the quarter way point of the AT (heading northbound). I'm looking forward to completing this state, maybe next year. We're starting to accumulate a number of gaps. We've got a 4 mile gap in Vermont, multiple gaps in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
