U.S. State High Point #9!
Directions: East of the Mississippi state high point
After visiting the Mississippi, we headed east to the Alabama state high point. Alabama like Mississippi, was so green. We plugged in the GPS coordinates we found online, and didn't bother to read the directions. We ended up taking a 2.5 mile long gravel road which ended at a gate. It looked like all private property, and no place to park. Apparently we ended up at the south side of the park, and we weren't sure if there is a public right of way to get to the high point, or even how far it would be from the gate. We turned around and drove 50 minutes to approach the park from the north side. You drive through a campground to get to Bunker Tower. There is parking right across from the tower. We were the only ones there. It's an old stone building, unfortunately surrounded by communication towers. There are views at the top, but it was cloudy today.
Because we were doing so much driving for 2 days on this trip, I actually packed a wedge pillow to sit on while driving, to help reduce hip pain. I was still sore, but the pillow helped.
After a stop at Whole Foods in Birmingham, we continued on to Douglasville, Georgia to spend the night.
