Today we went for a drive on the Road to Hana. We bought the Shakra app which I highly recommend. It gives suggested stops and adds in some history lessons, much of which we learned by visiting the national parks in Hawai'i. It was a very useful guide. You can't do all of the stops in a day, so you have to choose which ones you want to do.

I've read everywhere how scary the drive is. But Dian was our driver, and she did an excellent job. I actually found the drive relaxing and didn't have a problem with nausea. When locals come up behind you, the proper etiquette is to pull over to let them pass. The ride back was a little more stressful due to oncoming cars (locals) going very fast towards you on the narrow road, but still it wasn't bad.

Various things we did...not particularly in the right order.

We stopped at a stand for banana bread. Delicious.

We visited 3 waterfalls, including Twin Falls, where we did a hike. Some people swim at Twin Falls, but we found it very crowded. At another waterfall stop, people were jumping off the top of the waterfall into the pool below. Dian and Phyllis swam. I got in up to my waist. Although hot outside, the water was very cold.

We did stop at the black sand beach (advanced reservations necessary). I swam there - the water was much warmer. There are nice views and a sea arch.

We stopped for shaved ice to cool off. There didn't seem to be much in the way of vegetarian food on the drive, so we stopped in Paia at a restaurant for dinner.
