Lisbon - Sightseeing

I had found a website with some suggestions of places to visit, so we started working our way down the list and got a few done. We walked from our hostel to the Baixa district - easier than taking public transportation :)

Our first stop was the Archaeological Museum. I loved this place! It was one of my favorite stops in Lisbon. It was busy, but not as crowded as some places we visited. The museum is housed in a church built in 1389 but damaged in the 1755 earthquake that occurred in Lisbon. As a result, the ceiling is gone, but the amazing architecture is still apparent.

Then we headed to Rossio plaza, Arco da Rua Augusta, and Praca do Comercio. We walked along the waterfront. Then headed to Pink Street with its fun umbrellas. We went to Igreja de Santo Antonio (built in 1195), and Se de Lisboa (Lisbon's oldest church built in 1147). We went inside the cathedral - lots of opulence and wealth there. Then off to the Amalfa district, and the Elevador de Santa Justa (elevator).

We stopped at cafes to eat during the day, then made a salad in the hostel for dinner. In the evening, we met a couple from Brevard also staying at our hostel. They had left the area 5 days after the hurricane, got married in Virginia, then flew to Portugal. She works for the state identifying birds and he works for Oskar Blues Brewery. Of course we talked a lot about what is happening at home, since Phyllis and I haven't been in NC since before the hurricane.

Useful website for planning sightseeing stops. All within walking distance.
