Fisherman's Trail Day 3 - Almograve to Zambujeira do Mar

Date Distance Time Elevation Gain Average Moving Time Year to Date Miles
9/27/2024 12.7 miles 8 hours ? ? 598.7 miles

I wasn't careful about my phone yesterday in the rain. As a result, my phone got wet, and I couldn't charge it for 24 hours. I had to rely on everyone else for photos and navigation today. We had breakfast at a restaurant next door to our hotel. I'm eating so much more than what I normally eat at home.

After two wet days on trail, today we had sunny skies and beautiful views. We were hiking up on cliffs, which is typical of this trail. The trail was busier today. We are meeting folks from all over - many Germans and Canadians. We met very few if any hikers from the US. We did meet Americans in Lisbon.

One of the things the trail is known for is storks. The stork nests always seem to be at the pinnacles of the sea stacks. Sometimes we'd get lucky and see a stork in a nest.

The trail passed by a town mid-day, so we stopped at a cafe along with many other hikers. Portugal has such a strong cafe culture. We had some road walking on our hike today. It was very sunny, so I had to slather on sunscreen a lot. The other 3 were wearing long sleeve shirts for sun protection, which was smart. Temps were generally around 70 degrees during our hike, but we were often hot, being in direct sunlight all day. I got quite a tan on my arms. I wore a wide brimmed hat to prevent my face from burning. I brought shorts, but generally wore long pants, because I was afraid of burning my very white legs.

Our hotel tonight (White Rose Boutique Hotel) has ocean views. I think its new and they aren't so used to hikers. "Don't touch that. Put your poles there. Don't put your things there." Yes, hikers aren't upscale guests, lol.

WNC is having a catastrophic storm today and I can't get in touch with Glen. I'm concerned, because other people in the area are posting on Facebook, but Glen isn't responding. Note after the fact - Glen was fine, but cell service was not.

Breakfast at the restaurant next to our hotel.

Evening wine and dinner on our hotel room balcony.

Soft sand makes for tiring hiking

Our hike was mostly on cliffs along the coast,
but occasionally we'd go through the woods.

A lot of our hike was on sandy trails like this.

Three amigos

We did see the occasional lizard.
I saw a black snake once but couldn't get a photo of it.
