Map:Directions:- Hike from Garenflo Gap to Bluff Mountain. Return the same way.
We've been wanting to do trail maintenance for a while, but it's been hot, humid, and rainy for the last month. Today was humid, but not hot and rainy. We figured there would be a lot of blowdowns with the storms we've had, so the plan was to remove trees, do some lopping, and fix any quick tread issues. The road to our trailhead is getting even more crappy. I was going to park on the pavement, but Glen volunteered to drive our poor car up the gravel road. We made it, but our poor car. We removed 4 trees on our hike and left 3 for sawyers. We fixed a couple of root ball issues, one new, one old. Glen used to have a fantasy that the weed whacking we do in the spring would mean less weeds the next year. Sigh. We spent 2 long days (9 hours each time!) weed whacking this spring. But today, between miles 3-4 up the mountain, the stinging nettles were enormous again. OMG. I think we both wanted to cry. We met a few backpackers today, one who complained about the overgrown trail. We didn't have swing blades with us, so there wasn't much we could do. I was pretty exhausted hiking today too. Glen felt fine. On the way down, he tried using his saw as a swing blade to cut a few of the weeds. I pulled some of the non-stinging nettle ones out by hand or by lopping them. Not very practical. Next time, we may have to go out and do some weed whacking.
