We had been hoping to camp at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, but the campground was full by the time we were ready to make reservations. We spent one day hiking in the park. We saw some prairie dogs and mule deer as we drove into the park. We started with the Blackmer Loop/Cougar's Shadow, and then expanded to add more trails. The early part of the hike was partially shaded, but then eventually we were in full sun and got hot. The outside temperature wasn't that hot, but the direct sunlight was hard for us. I'm used to hiking on the east coast with lots of trees. The trails were easy/moderate, without much elevation gain. We stopped by the visitor center during our hike and had cold drinks and ice cream to cool off. We hung out in their chairs and relaxed for a while. We hiked back to our car and decided not to hike anymore in the park due to the strong sun. This park is very well maintained and has excellent signage and a nice visitor center. I think the staff recommend the Blackmer Loop as their favorite place to hike in the park.

Seek couldn't identify, but something in the pea family
