Carolina Mountain Club Challenges:
- Waterfall Challenge
Our third stop was Spoonauger Falls, which is very close to King Creek Falls, but not on the Foothills Trail. We met a couple in the parking lot who said a group of people had just left a fire burning at a campsite very close to the parking lot. They asked if we had any containers for water to put it out, as they didn't have any. We told them we'd take care of it. So, I grabbed Krumm's water bucket from the car, and off we went. The campsite was just a few feet from the river. OMG. The fire was burning well, and the campsite was trashed. There were beer bottles, plastic bottles, and a fleece in the fire. Why would you burn your clothes? I put Krumm in a down stay, and Glen and I spent 20 minutes getting water from the river to douse the fire. We didn't pack out their trash though - we really need to carry a grocery bag in our packs. There was a huge cabbage, half eaten apples, as well as beer bottles, etc. UGH. Gross people. After we were satisfied the fire was out, we hiked to Spoonauger Falls. We came across the lab and 3 people again, hiking out. This time Krumm was scared of one of the men. Oh boy. Luckily, I had cheese ready, and we worked on it. This waterfall had a pretty shallow pool, so less exciting for Krumm.
