Our plan worked out well, so today we only had 7.3 miles to hike. We woke up while it was still dark out, to get an early start. We finished by noon, which was our plan.

Today's hike took us through the Pond Mountain Wilderness, on a steady climb up Pond Mountain, and then a steady descent down Pond Mountain. We beat the rain! I did get nailed 3 times by a single yellow jacket. Those things are evil. I didn't even see a nest. I was brave about it (this time lol).

Glen drove to Shook Branch Recreation area to pick me up. He had originally planned to hike all the way up Pond Mountain, but since we had a much shorter day, he didn't have time. We met him just .5 miles from the end of our hike. Mercury and Purple Lotus headed off to Boots Off Hostel to evaluate the rest of their plans. I headed home with Glen, as I have a hike to lead on Sunday.

Laurel Fork Shelter (don't recommend)

Silliness at the campsite
Fall colors just starting
Watauga Lake
Lobelia. I didn't take any photos, but we saw tons of gentians on our trip
