Our second Christmas day hike. There were many more people out today on this section. We saw kids in wet suits in the ocean, as well as a kite surfer. Today's excitement was seeing a dead dolphin on the beach. A family was out there doing something with it. The man cut off the dolphin's head. OMG. I really, really did not need to see that. I saw him throw something in the ocean. I'm not sure if it was the head or the remaining body. Hopefully I don't have nightmares tonight! We passed under the Rodanthe pier, which is falling apart. We also saw more houses whose stilts are in the ocean.
We didn't quite finish segment 18 of the MST this trip. We have about another day of hiking just south of this hike, as well as 14 miles on Ocracoke, the island south of here, accessible only by ferry. We may come back another winter and explores some more. Overall, a relaxing vacation, and great to get away from work for the week. I enjoyed visiting in the winter, as there are very few people out on the beach. If you are looking for information on dog beaches, I did find this: Pets & the Beach | Dare County, NC (darenc.com)
