I took the day off work to hike a challenging section of the AT with Glen. We got up early as we knew we'd need lots of time. We drove separate cars so we could do a point to point hike. I got to the first parking area, and saw a text from him that his tire pressure was very low, so he was going to look for a place to fill them up. I waited and waited and he never arrived. I decided to drive half hour away to our hike end point to get better cell reception. We finally met up, and even though he filled his tires, one tire was continuing to lose air. We drove to a tire shop, and they found a screw in one of the tires. A quick repair, but we no longer had time to do our planned hiked.

We headed home to regroup. We decided to hike a section of the Mountains to Sea Trail, because that would give us a lot of flexibility in trip distance. We started out by filling in this gap which we hadn't done. The first half of the trip was level and easy, other than some rooty terrain. The second half of the hike had some climbing. At the top of Ferrin Knob were the footings of a previous fire tower. The trail had a few small streams for Krummholz to step in. We were both a little warm and tired, but still wanted to hike more when we were done.

We went down the parkway a ways, and chose a different parking area to do another section of the MST. We hit a ton of road construction, went past our entrance, had to turn around. Got to our parking area, then decided we'd rather park at a different area in the arboretum. We got to the arboretum, and the fee to park was $16. We just wanted to hike the MST, we weren't there to actually see the arboretum. I also thought I saw a sign saying the grounds closed at 6pm (it actually closed much later), a couple of hours away, so not so great for our hike. We decided to go in, and purchase an annual pass for the arboretum. Some neighbors suggested it as a good place for winter hiking. We ended up spending an hour walking around the arboretum. We'll definitely take more trips here, both for their winter lights festival, and to see their spring flowers.
