Parking: One car at each parking area
Directions: Hike southbound from VA 615 to VA 623 (one way)
We dropped off one car at VA 623. This involved around 30 minutes of driving on a one lane gravel road. It is doable, but you just hope that there aren't any cars coming the other way. There are some ruts and very sharp switchbacks. It wasn't my favorite road to drive on, lol. We left one car there, and had to drive down the road again in order to head towards our second parking area. VA 615 is also a gravel road, but in better condition. This hike started out with a climb of around 700' to start, and I got hot even though it was only 67 degrees out. This week, each day we are going to hike in the direction which gives us more of a climb. Why? Because this year I'm working on getting into better hiking shape after barely hiking last year due to my orthopedic issues. After our climb, we had a lovely flat stretch. Ahhhh. We took a lunch break at the Jenkins shelter, then had a 1,700' climb. Yes, this was very tiring. I did need to take a number of breaks. But every day I'm getting stronger! That's what I keep telling myself :) We met a hiker today who said he came across a huge well fed rattlesnake on the trail. Fortunately we didn't see it. After that, I tried to scan the trail up ahead more.
