Parking: Parking lot next to Laughing Heart Hostel in Hot Springs
Directions: Hike west on the AT to turn off for Deer Park Shelter. Return the same way.
The CMC needed someone to check on this section after tropical storm Fred. We let them know we were available to do additional scouting on the AT, so they gave this section to us to check. We were told this section hadn't been maintained in a while (it needs a section maintainer), so we brought loppers and a saw. Most of the work on this section involves lopping rhododendrons. We reported on downed trees and tread work that was needed. We found a small cemetery near the shelter. I always find visiting cemeteries out in the woods interesting. Who were these people? I couldn't find anything about them. After the hike we came home, and then took off for a week of hiking in Virginia.
