Parking: Lookout Road. There were 2 parking areas with numbered spots. We parked in the 3rd parking area (highest) for overflow parking.
Directions: Go to the lowest parking area, and start the trail from there, heading counter clockwise on the Rainbow Road Trail. Cross a street, and continue on the trail. Pass an intersection for the Rainbow Mountain Trail. Reach an intersection with 3 choices of trails. Take the middle trail (Old Trestle Road) and then turn let onto Lookout Trail to return the middle parking lot.
Another after work hike. This was an easy/moderate hike in Montreat. The trail started out very easy - the trail was wide and maintained very well. It turned into gravel for a while, and even was paved for a ways. When you reach a road crossing, the trail crosses the road and there are spray painted arrows directing you into what looks like someone's driveway, to continue the trail. From there the trail is more trail-like, with more rocks and roots. We passed the intersection with the Rainbow Mountain Trail, which we've hiked previously. From there we hiked to an intersection which was a bit confusing, but looking at the map now, it makes sense. There is one trail called "alternate Rainbow Road trail" which is not on the map, and shouldn't be taken, as it basically leads you back the way you came. Take the Old Trestle Road trail and look for a left turn on the Lookout trail which descends. From there, it leads you to the parking area. The town of Montreat is very pretty, as is this trail. There are so many rhododendrons, and the trail has a thick tree canopy. It's very lush and green. The trails are pretty wide, making it appropriate for shorts (I usually hike in pants to avoid ticks).
