Although I have just barely come back from my weeklong introduction to lightweight backpacking class/trip in Virginia, I signed up for another women's beginning backpacking guided trip in Jackson, New Hampshire. The highlight of this trip was a chance to do a river crossing twice. This is something that I haven't felt comfortable with, so it was great to get some instruction. The water went up to my knees in one spot. Of course I've read about how to do a safe river crossing, but reading about it and doing it are two different things. I'm still considering taking a full day class on river crossings. I'm hoping to backpack the Timberline Trail next year, which has several river crossings.
I can't say this trail was particularly nice. The trail had deep shoe sucking mud, and I got eaten alive by bugs. The trail was overgrown - I could imagine Glen complaining about the lack of trail maintenance, lol. Our first day was hot and humid, with a thunderstorm at night. Our second day wasn't as bad - we appreciated the cooler weather. The trail had hundreds of pink and white lady slippers. I've never seen so many on one trail. The trip was for 3 women and a guide. All of them were strong hikers, used to NH trails. I talked a bit with our guide on ideas of how to best pack my pack. She suggested ditching a couple of my stuff sacks to make things fit better, and possibly folding rather than rolling my sleeping pad. My 2 person tent doesn't fit nicely in the tall side pocket of my pack. 3 of us, including the guide, all had Mariposa backpacks. Our tent site was great - with enough room for everyone to spread apart if they wished to do so. We saw tons of moose poop on our hike, but unfortunately, no moose.
