Directions: White trail to summit, and white trail back down
We didn't have time for a longer hike, so we took the white up and down. It usually has more people on it, so we prefer the blue trail. We hiked up with Krummholz using his head halter. He still hates it.
In our Fenzi class, we are focusing on just recalls for the first week. My first training goal is to have Krummholz recall away from people who approach us when hiking. It's a good first recall challenge. Trek has an awesome skill - when he sees anyone in the distance, he'll run back to me to either be put on a leash or walk directly behind me. I realize he does this because he's a less confident dog, but its a wonderful default behavior. Not everyone likes dogs, especially dogs off leash, so I don't want my dogs to interact with strangers on the trail without permission. I never have to worry about how far Trek gets ahead, because I know if he sees another person/dog/wildlife, he'll automatically come running back to me, without any verbal cue. I would love for Krummholz to have this as default behavior as well.
When we reached the summit, I let Krummholz off leash, and we worked on recalls. Then more recall training hiking down the mountain. Lots and lots of recalls. He has a good recall foundation, but I need to gradually expose him to more challenging situations - people, dogs, wildlife, smells.
