Directions: Hike #18 Bayocean Spit in 100 Hikes / Travel Guide, Oregon Coast & Coast Range
We drove an hour away from our first hike of the day to our second hike. I wanted a hike on a beach. We drove to the parking lot which had quite a few cars in it. The parking lot was lined with blackberry plants. Oh my! Tons and tons of ripe blackberries. We stopped and stuffed ourselves before our hike. We started out hiking along the bay side of the spit on a gravel/dirt road. It was easy hiking with only the bay view. We hiked to the end, and decided to return on the ocean side, so beach hiking. A big section of the beach was closed for nesting birds, but you are allowed to walk close to the ocean on wet sand. Periodically there were places you could cross across the spit to get back to the bay side if you wanted to. As we got closer to our starting point, we started seeing tents on the beach. People were camping. Oh, I want to camp overnight on the beach! I so wish I had snuck our backpacking equipment along on this trip. We crossed over to the bay side, and saw a couple of tents on that trail too. Back on the bay side trail, we saw more people biking with their Big Agnes tents attached to their bike racks.
One thing that I love about the Oregon coast is that all 362 miles of the beach have public access. What a fabulous law! We enjoyed the beaches, and never found them crowded.
