Yesterday was our first day in Bend. There was too much smoke to hike. It was pretty disappointing. We had failed to do much planning of non-hiking activities (typical), but I read that the High Desert Museum is a good place to visit. A lot of the museum is outside actually, but it wouldn't be strenuous activity, so it was okay. We really enjoyed the museum, and spent the better part of a day there. We learned a little bit about forest fires as well, which was a good education for us. I struck up a conversation with a woman from Bend, and asked her all about living in the area. It sounds like they just get used to living with smoke. Our favorite part of the museum was a raptor show. It was less smoky in the evening in Bend, but the air qualify forecast was really bad again. Since my foot muscles were hurting a lot, we went to REI and I bought a new pair of trail runners. They felt fine in the store. Sigh.

The next morning, the air quality was hazardous in Bend. Ack. I just want to go hiking! We saw that the Mount Hood area was okay, so we drove 2 hours north back to Mount Hood to do the Timothy Lake loop. We took a side trail to the PCT. We saw a lot of thru hikers on the PCT - we should have stocked up on Snickers bars and offered trail magic to them. The trail today was flat and easy, but my feet were in agony in my new shoes. I have such a hard time finding shoes that work for my feet. These were the brand new shoes I bought yesterday.

There was a lot of camping in this area, but our trail mostly avoided the car camping areas. The other areas were called dispersed camping - the sites were spread far apart, so there was plenty of privacy. Some sites were right next to the water. The trail wasn't right next to the water, but there were many side trails to hike to the lake. Our Mount Hood map didn't cover this hike, but we had our guide book (with a non-detailed map) and the trails downloaded using our Gaia GPS app.

Really blue and really clear lake

  1. I can't get over the smooth trail surfaces. That really stinks when your feet hurt and the trails are smooth.

  2. I normally wear Altras, but they just started bothering me on this trip. So I bought Salomons I thinks. Which I've worn in the past. I thought they were wide enough. I think I need to try shoes on and just sit wearing them for 30 minutes. Usually it takes around that amount of time to figure out that they aren't wide enough - my feet start to tingle and go numb.
I did end up with a solution. My arches were feeling sore in my Altras, so we went to a Walmart and I bought insoles with better arch support. It worked!
And since coming home I bought yet another pair of shoes. Wide width Salomons. I think they are going to work well! I haven't worn them much, but I got through a gym class with them no problem.
