We went from our motel in Homestead to the Guy Bradley Visitor Center in Flamingo. We got lucky and were able to snag spots on a 2-hour free volunteer lead kayak tour. We have met a few retirees who end up traveling and spend months at a time volunteering at a national park. This volunteer wasn't super talkative, but we had a great time and did learn a bit. We saw a spoonbill as well as many other birds. It was a cold day, so it seemed crazy to go kayaking, but we ended up feeling comfortable.
As soon as we finished, we were cold and changed into dry clothes. Dian and I used the outlets in the visitor center lobby to heat up some water to cook ourselves lunch. We then did a short hike from the visitor center. We asked at the visitor center for recommendations of other hikes which weren't submerged in water. None of us wanted to do a wading walk, because we were cold. So, we drove to the Snake Bight Trail, our best chance of seeing wildlife. We saw a snake, but not much else. We did other short trails on our way out of the park: Mahogany Hammock Trail, Pa-hay-okee Trail, and the Pinelands Trail. Back at the visitor center by the park entrance, we stopped and boiled water in their restroom. I want to write the NPS & request all visitor centers have hot water dispensers, since I use so much hot water to make meals and tea ;)
