Map: NYNJTC Northern Harriman Bear Mountain Trails, Map 119
Parking: Elk Pen
Directions: Take AT to Arden Surebridge trail. Stay right on red on white blazed Arden Surebridge Trail. Follow trail around Island Pond to Lemon Squeezer intersection. Turn left on AT and return to the Elk Pen.

We met a woman at the trailhead who said she's planning on hiking the AT this year. She was out to test her gear.

Our 2018 map showed an area on the Arden Surebridge trail that is seasonally impassible. Once we were there, we remembered it. We had hiked here before, and there had been knee deep water on the trail. We had bushwhacked around it, and it wasn't an easy bushwhack (we still had to cross a body of water). Luckily today it was passable. When we got to the other side, the blazes for the Arden Surebridge trail went straight and to the right. Did they come up with an alternate route? We went straight.

  1. Hi,

I've been following your blog for 3-4 years and have really enjoyed it. Am curious as to why you're no longer posting and hope all is well with you and your family (and dogs) amidst this COVID-19 crisis. Perhaps it's just that you're no longer doing the blog anymore?

I live in Western MA and really like reading about your hikes in the Catskills and surrounding area.

Thanks for any info you care to share,

    Susan P.

    1. Thanks Susan. I fractured my ankle in March while hiking this year. Unfortunately, it takes about a year to fully recover. And then I had a minor knee surgery. I have a handful of posts to upload for 2020, but I should be back to hiking a lot more in spring of 2021 :)
