I've started a training program to help get me stronger for backpacking trips. Today's goal was to hike for 5 hours wearing a 25 lb pack. That's about what I'd expect my pack weight to be for a 3 day backpack. I chose a hike in Harriman, since its a park which doesn't allow hunting. The Ramapo Dunderberg trail is my favorite trail in the park due to its large rock slabs, glacial erratics, and views. There were so many people out hiking today! It was a cold day, but the sun was out, making it really nice for a winter hike. We took a couple of breaks. I carried two thermoses of lentil soup, so we stopped and had those for lunch. What a great way to add weight to your pack & warm your insides. I also brought a thermos of tea. When I ran out, I stopped & boiled some water to refill my thermos. The hike I chose didn't end up having that much elevation gain - I really should try to find hikes with more. Our hike was at a relaxed pace, and my energy level was good. Now to build up more elevation gain, and more miles.
