Kaaterskill High Peak, Catskills

July 19, 2014
Distance: approx. 8.9 miles
Time: 6 hours 25 minutes
Map: Catskill Trails Map Set

Year to date miles: 262

Parking: Room for around 10 cars in the Platte Clove parking lot. The parking lot was full when we arrived. We managed to squeeze into a very muddy area, which I'm happy we were able to get out of. We also saw a bit of roadside parking to the west on Platte Clove road.
Restrooms: None
Notes: Catskill 3500 footers #31

Directions: Kaaterskill Hike Peak (7.2 mile version)
Here is another variation showing the sites of 2 plane crashes: Kaaterskill High Peak

Notes: For the first 3 or so miles, the hike is on a wide trail, sometimes level, sometimes climbing. The trail was very, very muddy in lots of places. The terrain was also very rocky, making our feet and ankles sore by the end of the day. This hike counts as a bushwhack, but there is a super-clear herd path to the summit. The herd path is steep, and requires rock scrambling. There was one view before the summit. The summit has a cairn, and at this time a piece of one of the plane crashes. There were 2 herd paths that wander around the summit area. We tried both of them. Both lead to areas with views, including Hurricane Ledge.

Stinging nettles on both sides of the trail.
