Appalachian Trail near Graymoor / Garrison

May 3, 2013
Distance: 1.7 miles
Time: 1 hour 17 minutes
Year to date miles: 76.4

Map: East Hudson Trails Map

Parking: Intersection of Old Albany Post Road and Chapman Road in Garrison, NY. Room for 1 car. This is a dirt road.

Our original idea was to head to Denning Hill from the south - Old West Point Road East - but we couldn't find the parking area. It's marked as a major parking area on the NYNJTC map (dark P), but we didn't see it. It was a dirt road with only the rare house, so it seems like it would be impossible to miss. But, we couldn't find it. We did see one sign for the border of the AT corridor, but not the AT itself, and no parking. We'll have to research more. So, we drove north and hoped there would be a spot to park on Old Albany Post Road, even though none is marked on the NYNJTC map. We were in luck, and there is a spot for 1 car next to the trail.

Restrooms: None
Post hike dinner:  None

Directions: Cross the street and follow the white blazes. We didn't have a lot of time, so we hiked to the first overlook. Hiking a bit further would have brought us to Denning Hill. No road crossings.

Notes:
I loved the houses in this area. They are in such a natural setting, far apart from each other. When we started the hike, I noticed just how quiet it was. Very peaceful.

Not marked as a parking area on the NYNJTC map, but room for 1 car.

Boardwalk at the beginning of the trail.

The trees are looking much greener this week.

We took a break here to enjoy the view and then tuned around.
