Carolina Mountain Club Challenges:
- 100 Waterfalls Challenge
Visiting the petroglyphs in South Carolina has been on my wish list for a while. Today we finally had some cooler weather (yeah!!!!), so we headed to South Carolina to see the petroglyphs. They are located at Hagood Mill, near Pickens, SC. It's free to visit and dogs are allowed. The petroglyphs are on a large stone outcrop, which has had a building built around it. They play a movie in the building, and shine lights on the stone so you can see the petroglyphs. Both Glen and I wished they had consistent lighting on the stone to make it easier to see them. The site also has historic buildings, so we walked around. It was interesting - seeing a moonshine still as well as a blacksmith shop, where a blacksmith was giving a lesson to a student. The mill house with a waterwheel was interesting as well - it looks a bit like Mingus Mill in the Smokies. On the 3rd Saturday of the month, they have more people inside the buildings, giving demos. Even though we went on a weekday, we both enjoyed our visit. They have a 3/4 mile nature walk on the grounds - we walked part of it.
After our visit to Hagood Mill, we drove to do a short hike at Twin Falls, in Sunset SC. This hike is very easy, mostly on a wide sandy trail. There is a viewing platform to see the falls. On the way back, we stopped at a nice rock outcropping along the river to let Krumm swim. Glen napped. We spoke to a couple of hikers who were so "shocked" that there were down trees along the trail. And that a tree that was previously down was no longer there. Neither of us quite understood why this was shocking, lol.
