Time for our annual weed whacking. Hiking was exhausting today for me (Glen was fine). I did strength training at the gym yesterday, so my muscles were tired before we even started. We hiked to the summit, crossing paths with a few backpacking groups. Normally we only see backpackers on our trail, not day hikers. We took a break at the top to eat before working on our way down. We use swing blades which are lighter to carry than an electric weed whacker. But maybe more effort once you are using it. The worst of our weeds are near our summit, which means we have to hike 4.1 miles in, before we even get to work. We ended up only completing 0.7 miles. We did go out on our section at the end of April, and it was fine. Now it was like a jungle! So much work. It normally takes us around 3 outings to finish weed whacking our section. This is our busiest time for trail maintenance - getting our weed whacking done. Krumm had a blast, as I let him walk off leash (well, dragging a leash) while we worked our way downhill. He was walking about 50 feet in front of us, and somehow managed to walk by a black rat snake in the trail, still dragging his 10' leash. I saw the snake and decided to go off trail around it. Glen decided to walk towards the snake, which made the snake slither down the trail towards me. Thanks Glen, lol! Unfortunately, we have new down trees to report, one of them being a big mess (removed by a CMC sawyer on June 7th - thanks!!!).
