A long drive for a short hike again. Krumm said this hike was perfect! We had the parking lot to ourselves, so we knew we were the only people on trail. The first 3/4 or a mile or so was through large open meadows next to a stream. I rarely hike off-leash with Krumm, but this was a good opportunity. Lots of visibility and no other hikers/people to disturb. He was in doggy heaven. Racing through the meadows and running into the stream. We practiced our random downs at a distance (100+ feet away) and our recalls. He was perfect. We had sunny skies, and it was 59 degrees. It just doesn't get much better than this. We entered the woods and I put him back on leash. This hike has several water crossings. They aren't too deep, but sometimes the rocks are slippery, so I did get my feet a little wet. As we approached the waterfall, the terrain became more difficult. A bit of scrambling and lots of slick rocks covered in moss. And lots of blowdowns. I let Krumm off leash to navigate the area by himself. He adeptly bounded over the boulders, into and out of the stream. Did I mention its wildflower season? Lots and lots of trillium and other flowers. We hiked out, again, letting him off leash in selective areas. It was so nice to see how much joy he got out of this hike.

If I ever invent a "meadow bagging" challenge, this hike will be on it. This was the perfect time to do it. On a weekday in spring.

On the ride out I saw my first armadillo. It was roadkill. But still kind of weird and cool. And on the ride home, we drove through the college in Brevard looking for white squirrels. All we saw were grey squirrels. I swear they are a marketing ploy ;)

Post hike herding lesson - more interested in me than the sheep...
