Carolina Mountain Club Challenges:
- 100 Favorite Trails hike #91
I'm leading a hike to Shortoff Mountain for the Carolina Club later this month, so today I scouted the hike with Glen and Kay and Krummholz. This hike is on the 100 Favorite Trails list. We hiked it last year in November past peak foliage season. I wanted to try again this year, and hopefully get some really good fall colors. This is Glen's FAVORITE hike in North Carolina. For me, its tied with the Roan Mountain area. It's a hike we have no problem doing again and again. I usually prefer to hike in new places rather than repeat hikes, but this hike is special.
The drive down the gravel Wolfpit Road isn't bad in the beginning but does have some deeper ruts near the end. The parking there is really, really bad. Hiking it on a weekend in October - not a good idea. Luckily, we got parking spots. On the way out, we did see a car who had a rear taillight smashed - I'm not surprised, because parking is such a mess there, it would be easy to get your car hit. So, I recommend it as a weekday hike.
The trail climbs steadily uphill on tall steps. The trail has lots of loose rocks, so care is needed, especially hiking down at the end. The uphill doesn't last long though. The views on this hike just get better and better. It's so beautiful! We did encounter lots of bees, but no one got stung.
