We weren't sure where to park in Damascus, so we chose the town park, next to the cabooses. Then back up McQueen Gap Road to park our second car.

Today was mild and much less windy. Again, lots of small rocks on the trail, covered in leaves, so we had to tread carefully. I heard a noise of something running down the side of the hill we were on. It's amazing I heard anything because we were so loud walking through the leaves. We looked around and saw a bear cub further down the hill.

We stopped for lunch at a tent site. I checked Guthook, and it mentioned there were ruins of a house foundation right where we were. We looked around and found nothing. There was a large fire pit. Maybe someone created the fire pit with the ruins?

Today was an exciting day! We passed by the Tennessee / Virginia state line. Time to focus on hiking Virginia! Leaf color was spectacular today - mostly yellows. As we descended and got closer to Damascus, the leaves got greener. Despite the leaf covered trail (which made my brain exhausted), we made good time today and entered Damascus at 1:30. So early! I've stayed in Damascus before at the beginning of an Adventures in Good Company trip. Hiking with a light daypack, going downhill all day made me feel strong ;)

Taking in the fall foliage on McQueen Gap Road

Lots of gentian on the trail still
Lunch break
I was hoping these were puffballs. I squeezed them. Nope.
An AT shelter in the middle of the town park. No camping signs EVERYWHERE lol.

Time for some post-hike relaxation
