Carolina Mountain Club Challenges
  • 100 Favorite Trails Challenge #8

We joined the CMC for a hike in the Smokies led by Donna. Many people joined this hike to complete the CMC challenge for hike #8. This hike was actually much longer than the hike #8 requirements.  Glen and I hiked this section in 2019 but went out to hike it again for the CMC challenge. I was happy for a longer hike, as I need to get more 10+ mile hikes in with a heavier backpack. I did add some extra weight to my pack, but not a full 22-pounds. I love balds, and today's hike had two balds!

Besides the balds, the highlight of the hike were the numerous puffball mushrooms. A number of the group didn't know what puffballs were, so I delighted in having them squeeze them to find out :) I squeezed several. I didn't know what puffballs were before I moved to North Carolina either. So fun!

Part of the hike follows the Bartram Trail as well. This is a long trail through Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina that's on my list of future hikes to work on - maybe this year? I've seen different distances for the hike - the Bartram Society lists it as 114 miles. The Bartram Trail - Blue Ridge Bartram Trail Conservancy So many trails to hike! I will be busy for a long time :)

The hike was tiring for us and long. On the way home, we ended up stopping at a restaurant in Waynesville to get Thai food. Yum!

Puffballs!

We thought this mushroom looked like an army cap or a horseshoe crab
