The clouds were starting to build after our Cataloochee hike, so we decided to do a short waterfall hike. There was a longer waterfall hike in the area, but we decided not to risk it. This hike is very close to the Appalachian Trail. We drove down the road to the waterfall when we were hiking from Brown Gap recently. We didn't have a map of the waterfall, so went off of the book directions. We parked at a gate for the Harmon Den horse camp. We wandered around to the left of the gate, but just found ourselves in spots for the horse camp. We were confused. Turns out there is a second gate to the right of the first gate - just around a bend. Aha! There is a small trail on the left side of the road. It was just a very short walk to the waterfall. It was muggy and very, very buggy. I kept getting bugs in my eyes, ears, and nose. Ugh. We stayed for about 30 seconds to look at the falls, and then turned around. Too many bugs to just hang out.

This is the gate to the horse camp. This is not the correct gate. |
|
Nope, this is also not the trail |
|
This is the correct gate - the trail starts just past it. |

We have had a few days of afternoon thunderstorms, but still this waterfall was not very impressive today. |
