We are skipping around various sections of the AT in NC and TN as we work on completing these states. After a snowy day yesterday, we headed over to Tennessee to work on a section. I still don't consider altitude enough when hiking here. This morning, I thought about wearing hiking boots due to yesterday's snow but ended up wearing trail runners. On our drive up, we passed by Roan Mountain, which was looking quite white. I almost turned around when I saw the snow. Oops. The road to Dennis Cove Road is pretty twisty. It's paved, but just very narrow, and I hoped no cars would approach us going the other direction. USFS 293 is a muddy dirt road, but the drive on it is very short. There's only room for a couple of cars to park at USFS 293.
In the end we had a lovely day. We had snow in the morning, but not more than an inch or two deep, so we were fine in sneakers. By the afternoon most of it was melted. We got some great views of snowy Roan Mountain. We stopped at one of them and made a hot lunch.
