Directions: Day Hiking Bend and Central Oregon, Hike #26, Green Lakes
Today was forecasted to be quite a bad AQI originally. We decided to try hiking to Green Lake. This is a very popular hike. On the way to the lake, we saw backpackers returning from the trailhead. This is another hike with campsites around the lake. Glen wanted to hike slowly, because it's supposed to better to avoid exertion when the air quality is bad. The smoke was heavy in one direction, but not bad where we were. I did notice I was coughing some. The hike follows a river, with waterfalls all over. There was a lot of sparkly obsidian on the other side of the river. We got to the first of the lakes & walked partway around it and took a break. We saw a dog swimming in the lake. A sign said that dogs must be on leash from July 15 - September 15, which is probably the main hiking season for this area. We got a peak of the larger lake just behind the lake we stopped at. The longer we stayed, the more people we saw - so best to try to start this one earlier in the morning. At the end of the hike, we stopped and soaked our feet in the river. It was ice cold and made us scream. We force ourselves to soak - my feet have been sore this trip, so I figured it would reduce any swelling. One fun thing - there were small pumice stones. When you throw them into the river, they float instead of sink!
Incredibly beautiful pictures! It's really an absolute delight to watch your clicks.
