Directions: Hike northbound on AT
After our trip to the PA state high point, we drove to our next hotel. We had time to kill. We tried to wait as long as possible for the rain to clear up - so we could get a few miles in. The rain only partially cleared up, but we were able to get a short hike in. I had completely planned a day by day itinerary for our trip, but in the end we did hikes out of order, split up one day into two hikes, sometimes hiked northbound sometimes southbound, etc. It got hard to keep track of which direction we were hiking by the end of the trip! It would have been more straightforward if we were always heading northbound and did our hikes in order. Some days I wondered if we would do our hike and end up arriving at our destination and not find our car there (because we messed up on our planning). Luckily, that never happened. On today's drive, I almost ran out of gas. Ugh. My gas light was on by the time we got to Shippensburg Road. But, we didn't want to waste time, so we hiked & found gas after our hike. I have to remember to fill up earlier when hiking out here. Cell reception isn't always available, so I don't want to get stuck after sunset with no cell reception and no gas in my car.
Today's hike was very, very wet. It started snowing while we were hiking. The trail was a stream after the heavy rain from today. There weren't enough rocks to rock hop on, so sometimes we just had to walk through the water. It was icy cold - so my feet got soooo cold. It was an embrace the suck kind of day. But, it was still much better than hanging out at the hotel! Eventually the trail followed a dry gravel path through an area which had a controlled burn last year. Todays hike was very easy. There was only one short rocky area. Tonight we are in Mechanicsburg and went to Wegmans for dinner. I used to have a friend who was in love with Wegmans. She talked about it all of the time. Glen is now in love with Wegmans. Ha! This town also has at least 2 Indian restaurants. It's a more exciting place to eat than Chambersburg. Today, we saw the 2017 half-way point sign on the AT. We still have many miles to go to reach OUR half way point. Our plan is to do at least 210 miles on the AT this year.
