Guide book: Hiking Joshua Tree National Park, a Falcon Guide
Directions: Hike #19 in guide book, Skull Rock Nature Trail
We still had time for a short hike, so we found this quick loop. We parked on the road right across from Skull Rock. We approached Skull Rock, and turned right, following the trail. We ended up at a campground. Then we had no idea which way to go. It was embarrassing that we couldn't figure it out using our map or guide book. We hiked through the campground and couldn't figure it out. We were running out of daylight, so we ended up just retracing our steps and hiking back the way we came. It was interesting to see what a campground looks like here. They are immensely popular. The park has a few campsites, and most days they were full. We had considered camping, but nights can get down to 30 degrees, which seemed too cold for me. But there were tons and tons of people camping. Some had RV's, some had tents, and then there were these: https://www.jucyusa.com/useful-travel-stuff/
One fun thing about this hike is that we saw jack rabbits. They have humongous ears. They look like cartoon rabbits.
