We were looking for an easy hike today and saw that the NYNJTC was having an introduction to trail maintenance class followed by some trail maintenance near Frick Pond. We've never hiked in that area of the Catskills and knew that it would be an easier hike, so we decided to sign up. We met at Morgan Outdoors in Livingston Manor. The store owner, Lisa, was very welcoming and is a trail maintainer herself. After a short introduction, we drove to the Frick Pond trailhead. The volunteers split into two groups. One group worked on drainage, and our group (with Ralph of catskillhiker.net) worked on clearing trees and branches from the trail. Our trip leader had to return early to walk one of the other volunteers back, but we continued on and did the loop, clearing branches as we went. We packed out a pile of trash from the Hodge Pond area as well. Normally our dog packs out trash for us, but we left him home today. There are TWO ponds on this hike though - perfect for dog swimming. If Trek only knew! We will be back as there are more trails in the area to explore.
