Map: NYNJTC Sterling Forest Trails, Map 100
Parking: Ironwood Drive (P6)

Directions: The hiker parking lot is down a dirt driveway, a sign partway down says Hiker Parking. From the parking lot, head back out towards the road. Turn left on road. Follow the road to another dirt road on the left side. Pass through a gate and follow the wide woods road marked by green blazes. Hike until the trail ends at a gate at Route 17A. Return the same way.

We were looking for a short easy hike today to loosen up our leg muscles. This afternoon we're supposed to get strong wind gusts, so it was a choice between a beach hike and a short hike we could do before it got too windy. We decided on this trail in Sterling Forest. The map indicates that it follows a woods road the whole way, so it sounded like just what we were looking for. The trail is labeled as a mountain bike trail and a ski trail as well. The terrain was easy, mostly non-rocky. We had an idea that no one would be out on the trail in front of us, so we let Krummholz get some off-leash running in.  He was happy to visit all of the puddles and seasonal streams. And of course he found an animal hole! We practiced his recalls, and he did very well. We did see people twice on the way back, and he recalled perfectly before they got close. Now if I could only teach him to walk nicely on a leash!

  1. Isn't it great to be able to get out there again? I finished PT a couple of weeks ago so I don't have the therapist holding me back any more, LOL. But seriously, the surgeon said last Tuesday no more restrictions, come back in December at the anniversary of the surgery. Walking uphill feels very strange (not the same as going up steps) but he said that will resolve, just keep at it. I think the Hogback Mountain Trail is the only trail I have not hiked in Sterling yet and that looks like a good one for me, too. Thanks for the idea!

    1. I think I just have one more PT session. That is so exciting that you have no more restrictions! This trail is mostly easy footing. Some rocks in places, but much easier footing than most trails. Right now my physical fitness is holding me back!!! I'm very slow and I don't totally trust my body yet. Today I went down a rock slab on my rear end just to be safe. But I'm going to try to hike 3 days a week, and try to build up cardio & strength that way.
