I took the day off to go hiking. I managed to arrange it on a sunny day. My goal is to be able to do back to back 8 mile days by the end of April. I figure if I can do that, I can start thinking about taking a week off to go hiking. This week I did two 8 mile days with 2 rest days in between. The Elk Pen parking lot was close to full today. On a Tuesday! There were a fair number of people on the trail, but nowhere near as bad as on Saturday. Still, the amount of people we saw today, used to be the amount of people we would see on a weekend hike in Harriman. So yeah, a lot more people are out hiking - and on a weekday! This hike starts uphill right away. This is good training for me! We stopped briefly at Island Pond. I let Krummholz offleash. He was so excited by the pond! He only dipped his feet in, and didn't swim. We didn't stay long as there are a lot of mosquitoes in this area. This was a lovely hike. The Lichen trail is a favorite of mine, and of course I love the Ramapo Dunderberg trail. We made a point to stop at Bowling Rocks, which is a favorite spot. We stopped there and took out our stove and made a hot lunch. I also spent some time sketching, though decided to leave the watercolor portion until this evening. We passed by the opening of the Boston Mine. The mine was worked in the 1880's. Then onto the Valley of the Boulders, where we let Krummholz play in the water again. We returned to the parking area walking along the raging Stahahe Brook.
