Today, the forecast was for wind plus 2" of rain. It sounded like a miserable day for hiking. We decided to use today to do our side trip to Mount Davis, the Pennsylvania state high point. We woke up early and drove 2 hours to Mount Davis, Pennsylvania. This is our 14th state high point, at 3,213'. It was raining during our drive, but by the time we reached the park, it was snowing (and sticking!). There are hiking trails in the area, but we just followed the signs to the observation tower parking. There is a short trail to the right side of the kiosk at the parking area. It was very cold - 34 degrees and windy. There was no one else there of course - it was just miserable outside. I underdressed - which I've done before at highpoints with just a short walk in miserable weather. We walked to the tower, but neither one of us wanted to bother climbing up it. I was shivering, plus there was fog and snow, so there wouldn't be any views. Past the tower is a large boulder with a geodesic marker on it. There were information signs about the mountain, but I felt too cold to read them, so we headed back to the car. We didn't see a summit register. We did see some Amish in the area - in town we passed some horses w/buggies. We drove 2 hours back to Chambersburg to pick up our rental car - stopping in Hagerstown, Maryland for some lunch. We headed to Mechanicsburg, where our second motel of the trip was.

Trail is just to the right of the kiosk

Even Trek isn't enjoying the weather lol

  1. That is one of the hikes I have always been meaning to do on my drive to St. Louis but in the spring it is too cold and it snows and in the fall it is too cold and it snows. Maybe someday if I ever head that way in the summer.
