Ward Pound Ridge - Brown Trail

February 14, 2015
Distance: 4 miles
Time: 1 hour 50 minutes

Map: Ward Pound Ridge Pick up a map when you pay for parking.

Parking: Enter park, pay for parking and keep driving straight until you see a sign for the Meadow Picnic Area on your left.  There is plenty of parking. Cost is $10 without a Westchester County Parks Pass. $5 with a Parks Pass. I went on a weekend, when they do charge. In the winter we haven't been charged on weekday evenings.

Restrooms: None

Directions:
More information on the park: Ward Pound Ridge Reservation
Go to the back left corner of the parking lot.
Head towards a large wooden sign which will have a "FH" (Fox Hollow Trail) marker.
Follow the Fox Hollow Trail.
Stay straight when the Fox Hollow Trail makes a sharp right.
Immediately after that, go over Cross River on a Bridge.
On the other side of the bridge, turn Left onto the Brown Trail.
Follow the Brown Trail in a clockwise direction.
Note that many intersections are numbered, and you can correspond the numbers to your map.
When you return to your original intersection with the Fox Hollow Trail (marked 1 on the map), turn left onto the Fox Hollow Trail, and retrace your steps back to the parking area.

Notes:
Winter and spring/fall weekday evenings are my favorite times to visit Ward Pound Ridge. This park can be very busy in the summer, but if you go at the right time of year, you can enjoy a quiet hike. I only saw 2 other people today. I did this as a snowshoe. About half of the trail looked like it had been groomed for cross country skiing. It was very smooth and very well packed. The remaining half was packed, just less smooth.

Look for this sign from the parking area.
