Iceland - Snaefellsjokull National Park - Mount Hreggnasi

August 5, 2013

Distance: 2 m /  2.5 miles (based on brochure)
Time: 1 hour 20 minutes (based on brochure)
Year to date miles: 185.6

Driving directions: From Stykkisholmur, take route 58 south. Turn right on 54 west. Pass through the town of Grundarfjordur. 54 turns into 575. 575 turns into 574. Pass the town of Olfsvik. 574 turns into 573. Pass the towns of Rif and Hellisandur. Turn left at sign for Eysteinsdalur Snaefellsjokull. There is a sign on the gravel road at the parking area for the start of the hike. There is room for around 4 cars to park.

Map: Mal og menning, Map 10, Snaefellsnes (purchased from Omni Maps), also Trails in Snaefellsjokull

Parking: See above. Note - this is right at a sign which I believe says that cars like ours (Corolla) shouldn't go beyond.

More info: Snaefellsjokull National Park

Restrooms: None

Hike directions: We chose 5 short hikes, all start from the same gravel road. This was the fourth hike we reached on the road. It is described  as hike #14 in Trails in Snaefellsjokull. This is an out and back hike.
Lodging after: Hotel Egilsen, Stykkisholmur

Bridge crossing at start of hike

Summit is the point in the distance

The trail is marked by red painted posts - sometimes hard to see

The hike is over lava rocks the whole way

View of Snaefellsjokull glacier - not hikable in the summer due to crevasses.

Glen still excited by lava :)

Summit register - fun to read the entries & see all of the countries that other hikers come from

Windy summit, ocean view in the background

We think this was a snipe - it was like a roadrunner bird! It ran along the ground, flapping its feathers - very annoyed at us
for hiking in its territory!

Tonight's dinner - dehydrated bean/vegetable soup

Our view for dinner

Glen preparing my birthday dinner

Seriously great dinner view!
