Buck Mountain Loop from Otter Hole, Norvin Green State Forest

April 21, 2013

Distance: 4.5 miles
Time:  2 hours 48 minutes
Year to date miles: 44.8

Map: North Jersey Trails Map or Norvin Green

Parking: Glenwild Avenue, Bloomingdale, NJ. The parking area was full. There was another parking area just past it, also full. We ended up parking on the grass off the side of the road, like several others. Cars move very fast on this street, but luckily we didn't have to walk too far on it to get to the trailhead.

Restrooms: none
Post hike dinner: Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant (Montclair, NJ)

Directions: Buck Mountain Loop

Notes: We were a little worried about this hike since the parking area was packed & there were lots of people walking around the parking lot. However, once we past Otter Hole, we only saw 2 other people on the trails. I'm not sure where everyone else was hiking!

This hike has no road crossings (though according to GPS we crossed Snake Den Road - which at this point is actually just a woods road). This hike also has several streams and large puddles, making the dogs very happy.

There was a lot of broken glass and trash around Otter Hole, as well as by the look out towards NYC. After that the trails were much cleaner.

Roadside sign, which is where the trail starts.

Sign for Otter Hole, where this a waterfall & rocks to hop on

We have now left the crowds behind. Turn left here.

We saw some charred trees on the way up.

Moxie, with views of the NYC skyline in the distance.

This hike has some steep rock scrambling in the beginning.

We weren't sure where the exact summit of Buck Mountain was, but Everytrail estimated around this rock.
