- Sandstone Falls Boardwalk, New River Road, Shady Spring, WV
- Provided at Visitor Center
- Take the boardwalk trail to the end. Turn around and when you reach the Island Loop Trail, turn right onto it. Follow the Island Loop Trail until it returns to the boardwalk. Turn right on the boardwalk and return to the parking lot.
Our third hike of the day was to see Sandstone Falls. The drive there is on a paved road. Mostly easy driving on a 2-lane road, but the lanes were very narrow. The parking area was busy with lots of cars. There were lots of people out on the boardwalk - a very busy hike. The view of the falls is the best at the end of the boardwalk. We both enjoyed it. We got off the boardwalk near the end and walked to the river. We sat down and let Krumm wade in the water on leash. People drown here, so I didn't let him swim. A lot of people fish in this area, and there was someone fishing very close to us. Krumm got very excited by the fishing. I think when they throw their line, he thinks they are throwing something (like a stick) into the water. So, he was fascinated watching them. One of the fishermen near us was very entertained that Krumm was lying in the water staring at him, frantically wagging his tail. Well, the fisherman caught a 6" fish within a minute of casting his line. He unhooked it and showed it to Krumm. Krumm was super excited. He then threw the fish into the water right in front of Krumm - who went wild. The fisherman threw his line in again and caught a fish again within a minute. Same thing. He threw the fish towards Krumm. Now Krumm has never shown an interest in catching fish, but today Krumm has fallen in love with fishing.
