- Boston Mill Visitor Center, 6947 Riverview Road, Peninsula, OH
Directions:
- Follow the sign from the parking lot to Blue Hen Falls. This is an out and back, very well marked. It's a section of the Buckeye Trail, Ohio's long-distance trail.
The forecast was for rain today, but we got lucky. We headed to the visitor center to see what exhibits they have. I have to say I was underwhelmed by the visitor center. Some are definitely better than others. I asked for a park map - they gave me a newspaper about the park, but said they aren't giving out maps anymore. You can download the NPS app or take a photo of a map that they have in a notebook. They asked where we wanted to hike, and I mentioned Blue Hen Falls. We got all kinds of warnings - saying that it is the most aggressive hike in the park, and Brandywine Falls is much more accessible. We told him we are hikers, so it's okay.
Off we went uphill. Yes, there are some sections of steep climbs, but it is certainly doable, even for me being out of shape & having hip pain. This hike has constant car noise. This national park is in an urban area - between Akron and Cleveland, Ohio. A small part of the hike is next to a paved road. We did see a bunch of Jack in the Pulpit flowers along the trail. The waterfall itself was really nice. We were able to hike down to the bottom of the falls and let Krumm play in the river. He was so happy.
I struggled to get a focused picture of one, but we saw many jack in the pulpits in this park. |
